What Does Cynosure Mean ?

We often get asked what the Company name means. Early sailors discovered that one star in the sky - the North Star or Polaris - appears stationary to an Earth observer. This made it a good guide for long-distance navigation.

The Greek name for the star is Kynosoura, which implies "dog's tail". Polaris is a bright star and is the last one in the handle of the Little Dipper (Ursa Minor). The Greeks saw more of a dog than a dipper in those stars, hence the reference to a dog's tail.

The name was modified by the French and the English, taking on the spelling cynosure. The English used the name not only for Polaris, but also for the constellation and then for a reliable guide of any kind.

By the early 17th century, the word cynosure referred to people or things that were the focus of attention or observation.

On old sailing charts, the North Star is sometimes referred to as Cynosure. Since the company founder enjoys sailing, and has been out on Lake Ontario at night, using the North Star for guidance home, the name seemed appropriate to indicate that the company could provide steady, reliable, long-term guidance.

The dictionary definition says:

cynosure \SY-nuh-shoor; SIN-uh-shoor\, noun:

  1. Anything to which attention is strongly turned; a center of attraction.
  2. That which serves to guide or direct.
  3. [Capitalized]. The northern constellation Ursa Minor, which contains the North Star; also, the North Star itself.
